SIAC Coach and Player's of the Year

Coach of the Year
Willie Slater - Tuskegee University

During his first season as head coach at Tuskegee, Slater propelled the Golden Tigers to a 10-2 record in 2006 and an SIAC title. He is the first first-year Tuskegee coach to win the conference championship and 10 games in an inaugural season. He followed the 2006 season with a perfect 12-0 record in 2007, capturing another SIAC title and the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Black College National Championship. In 2008 and 2009, Slater guided the Golden Tigers to SIAC Championships, fourth consecutive titles.

In his first three years at Tuskegee, Slater has won conference crowns each year and his overall record is 42-5.

Offensive Player of the Year
AJ McKenna - Albany State University

Albany State University quarterback A.J. McKenna was the offensive mastermind behind the suc- ess of the 2009 Golden Rams. Starting all 11 games, McKenna led the Golden Rams to an 8-3 overall record and an NCAA Division II playoff berth. McKenna led the ASU “Gold Rush” offense with 2,355 yards of total offense. In 11 games, he passed for 2,027 yards, completing 154 of 288 passes for 19 touchdowns, an average of 184.3 yards per game; and rushed for 328 yards on 92 carries for a touch- down.

Defensive Player of the Year
Zimier McCloud- Clark Atlanta University

McCloud had a remarkable 2009 season for the Clark Atlanta University Panthers. The senior linebacker led the SIAC with 10.2 tackles per game (22nd in the nation for Division II), with 44 solo and 48 assisted tackles in 9 games. McCloud’s accomplishments for 2009 include: voted by coaches as SIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, SIAC All Conference Defense First Team, SIAC Preseason All Conference Defense Second Team, and played in both the East Coast Senior Bowl and the inaugural Russell Athletic HBCU Senior Bowl. He also led the Panthers to a ranking of 7th in the nation for pass defense and 18th in the nation for total defense. Most recently, McCloud was named to the 2009 Football Gazette All-Super Region Two First Team Defense. The first-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2009 NCAA Division II Football Gazette team will be named.

Defensive Player of the Year
Justin Hannah - Tuskegee University

Born March 9. Son of Jocelyn Hannah and John Hannah...2006 graduate of West End High School, Birmingham, Alabama ...A biology major in the College of Agricultural, Environmental and Natural Sciences HIGH SCHOOL: Recorded 9 interceptions, 39 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and 13 break-ups on offense...Caught 74 passes for 922 yards and 6 touchdowns on offense All-City (WR,DB), All-Metro (DB), All-State (DB) Grid Forecasters Most Outstanding wide receiver Team’s MVP, Best of the Super Senior List. Tied a State record for interceptions in a single-game. Led the city in receptions. First team Preseason All-SIAC Earned First Team All-SIAC 2009 - First Team Preseason All-SIAC All- SIAC Preseason Team.
