The Al Thompson Award

The Honorable Mayor Dr. Velma Hill Jenkins believes in family values, service to all mankind, academic excellence, moral and ethical values, and finer womanhood. She is a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Shuqualuk, MS, where she is a member of the Trustee Board.

She is a 1967 honor graduate of B. F. Liddell High School, Macon, MS; She is a 1971 Cum Laude Graduate of Jackson State College, which is now Jackson State University; She is a 1976 Master's degee Graduate of Mississippi State University. She has earned a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, and a Specialist degree Certification in English Education, Elementary Administration, Secondary Administration, Adult Education, and Educational Leadership. She has earned a Ph. D in Educational Leadership. She believes that the answer to the ills of our society lies with Jesus. For only Jesus has the power to change the hearts of men.

She likes to share with people that she is the youngest of sixteen children born to Alonzo Hill, Jr., and Pauline Shughter Hill. She has spent all of her adult life trying to make a positive difference in the lives of the boys and girls of Noxubee County, Mississippi.

She taught senior English for thirteen years. She was an administrative assistant for one year. She was principal of B. F. Liddell Middle School for nine years. She was principal of Earl Nash Elementary School for eight years. She is a member of Nu Epsilon omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, lnc. She is a Prince Hall Affiliate Eastern Star. She is a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She is a Board member of Community Counseling, Inc., and United Management Systems, Inc. She is a mefnber of Jackson State University Alumni Association. She was chosen Who's Who in American Education 1989- 1990. She was a member of the Former State Superintendent Richard Thompson's Principal Advisory Committee. She was a member of Former Governor Ray Mabus' Economic Advisory Committee. She is a former member of the State of MS Democratic Executive Committee and Noxubee County's Democratic Executive Committee.

Presently, she is a retired educator of 33.5 years; she is the Mayor of the Town Shuqualak, MS; and, she is a contract consultant for the Mississippi State Department of Education Office of Assessment and Evaluation.

During her tenure as Mayor of Shuqualak, she has vigorously sought after Federal and State Grant funds to help improve the quality of life for the citizens. The results of her efforts have paid off in the total sum of $4,000,000.00 dollars. Some of the programs include, but are not limited to, six new homes for families who lived in substandard housing, a sewer upgrade, refurbished above ground water tower, built and resurfaced streets, new first attack brush fire truck, new fire truck, new fire station, walking track and park, after school tutoring grant, two new sixteen passenger vans, two new police cars, federal cops grant, implemented a youth program which has resulted in zero youth offenses and violence.

She says that perhaps her greatest achievements are that she is a wife to, Hal Lee Jenkins; She is a biological mother to Hal Lavelle, Holli Lavette, and Lonnie Alonzo Jenkins II, and a chosen Mother to Franklin and Gregory Hill, and Trichia Hill Moore. She and her husband reared their children up in the church. All of their children are gainfully employed college graduates.
